Personifications of Websites.

In 2007 xkcd made a map of the internet based on user populations rather than ownership, Online Communities. The amusing skit above is from Cracked and sees the internet major sites as personifications like god heads, It is easy to see why Pirate Bay is mistrusted in this setup. It is depicted as a group huddled around a copier.

Humble Pride

What you have to understand about my people [Scotch Irish] is that they are a noble people. Humility is their form of pride, it is their strength, it is their weakness. And if you humble yourself before them they well do anything you ask.

"Imagine Finding Meat" - Mmm

Is it wrong that I found this image appetizing? It is screen grab  from an episode of Grey's Anatomy supposedly of a liver resection. Watching my mouth watered and all I could thing about was liver and onions. I think the message is you should never watch a medical show or documentary when you are hungry.

Or you can be normal.

Life is Hell - "Optimist"

How do you do it.  Even people like me who have criticized you really do admire your resolve.
Susan Berg, journalist

my usual answer is that I share the ethos with most Americans. If you work hard and give it everything you got tomorrow will be better than today.
Elaine Barrish, United States Secretary of State

And the truth?
Susan Berg, journalist

Most of life is hell, it is filled with failure and loss. People disappoint you. Dreams don't work out. Hearts get broken. Innocent journalists die. And the best moments in life when everything comes together are few and fleeting.

But you will never get to next great moment if you don't keep going.

Hit by Stupid Shrapnel

Many are aware of the Darwin Awards and chuckled at such stupidity. The problem is that sometimes, many time, idiots don't cause their own destruction but kill the innocent and survive. It is like drunk driving, the stupid often harm more than just themselves.

The above shows the danger of drive by stupidity.

The Matrix Effect

Ah, the early'90's: I was so innocent I barely knew which demographic I was.
Scott Brow in
Wired 2009/09/11 article "Geeky Friday

There is also an old saying that you should never examine too closely how sausages or laws are made. At the end of The Matrix, Neo can only see perceive the programming but not the our constructed reality.  Media training is good but it also robs you of the pleasure of pure consumerism / fandom.

Meditation On Coolness

There is seems be some sort power that allows cool people to imbue things with cool. Things become cool because the Cool Ones do it, own it, wear it, smoke it. But this is not permanent condition. Uncool people can also destroy cool. It is how things fall out of fashion. The uncool get a hold of it, the it, whatever it that cool did, owned, wore, smoked. At that point it, the it, is uncool. The cool have moved on or the embrace of the cool it by the uncool has transformed it into kitsch. People can not become cool by imitating the cool. Maybe advertising should remember that.

Here is TV Tropes examination of cool.

University: the Place to Retrain Obsessive-Compulsives

At this stage in life I am too organized, too driven. I need to learn how to be irresponsible. I need a place where my potential won't shine through and I can veg out.

George Orwell - Resource Site

Orwell.ru is a Russian domiciled site dedicated to George Orwell. Because of differing, or nonexistent, copyright laws this site has just about everything he wrote from the early novels, the reportage/sociology, articles. It has even collected his early poetry.

In Orwell latter years he was not popular with the Soviet Union, Comintern, British communists, fellow travelers and other people with the same ideological leanings. It is interesting that his work is up on a Russian site, with Russian translations. However this site is at .ru not .su

Be Your Own Gunman

The man to protect you is you. Not the state, not the agent of the state, and not your hired hand—YOU!

Jeff Copper in a short article, Cooper VS. Terrorism, reprinted from Guns & Ammo annual 1975, advocating everyone become their own bodyguard. That one should be armed and trained for close combat, and not depend on anyone else. It is mildly alarming prospect. In the bio of the author, Jeff Cooper, we learn that he was innovator of Modern Technique of the Pistol, practices and principals to maximize combat effectiveness.

For some more alarming thoughts here is poem that Jeff Cooper posted in his armory about shotguns. He also worked better ways of killing with shotguns along with rifle and pistol.

"The Colonel loves his twelve gauge
It hits so very hard
"That when he shoots his enemies
It tears them all apart

It blows off chunks of tissue
And leaves their clothing red
It leaves them ripped and shattered
And almost always dead

It vaporizes muscle
It pulverizes bone
Yet shotguns are the weapons
The even yuppies own

They claim they only use them
For shooting ducks and skeet
But when you're stuck, a load of buck
Turns predators to meat

Batman is All Alignments

Characters with many different writers and incantations can be radically different. Batman is just such a flexible character since he is a masked vigilante like the Lone Ranger or the KKK.
